None of them. Every 2026 Mazda CX-5 trim uses the Skyactiv-Drive six-speed automatic, not a CVT, and no CX-5 in any model year ever has.
Every 2026 CX-5 Trim and Its Transmission
Five trims, one gearbox. The transmission is not a trim decision on this car, which makes this the shortest table on the site.
2026 Mazda CX-5
| Trim | Starting MSRP | Transmission | CVT? |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2.5 S | $29,990 | Skyactiv-Drive 6-speed automatic | No |
| 2.5 S Select | $31,990 | Skyactiv-Drive 6-speed automatic | No |
| 2.5 S Preferred | $34,250 | Skyactiv-Drive 6-speed automatic | No |
| 2.5 S Premium | $36,900 | Skyactiv-Drive 6-speed automatic | No |
| 2.5 S Premium Plus | $38,990 | Skyactiv-Drive 6-speed automatic | No |
Starting MSRP as published by Mazda USA and confirmed September 2026. Excludes the $1,495 destination and handling charge, taxes, tags and dealer options. Every trim pairs the 2.5-liter Skyactiv-G four-cylinder, rated 187 horsepower and 186 lb-ft, with i-Activ all-wheel drive as standard equipment. The six-speed includes a manual shift mode.
Why the CX-5 Skipped the CVT, and What That Costs You

What a CVT actually is
A continuously variable transmission has no fixed gears. Instead of six or eight ratios it uses a belt running between two cone-shaped pulleys that change diameter, giving an unbroken range of ratios. That lets the engine sit at whatever speed is most efficient and stay there, which is why CVTs usually win on fuel economy. It is also why they can feel disconnected: press the pedal, the revs climb and hold, and the car gathers speed without the steps you are used to.
Most of the CX-5's direct rivals use one. The Honda CR-V, the Nissan Rogue with its Xtronic and the Subaru Forester with Lineartronic are all belt-and-pulley CVTs. This is a mainstream choice, not a cut corner, and modern versions are far smoother than the ones that earned the technology its reputation 15 years ago.
Mazda made the other choice on purpose
"The six-speed transmission works really well with our current Skyactiv-G engine, so we didn't want to change the recipe."
Stefan Meisterfeld, VP of Strategic Planning, Mazda North America, on the 2026 CX-5. He described the result as very linear and very direct.
That is the whole argument in one sentence. The Skyactiv-G 2.5 is a high-compression naturally aspirated engine, not a turbo, so it makes its torque in a predictable place. A geared automatic with a torque converter lets you feel where that is. You get a distinct shift, a downshift when you ask for one, and a manual mode with paddles if you want to hold a gear on the 15-501 on-ramp.
The honest trade, in numbers
What you give up
The EPA rates the 2026 CX-5 at 24 mpg city, 30 highway and 26 combined with i-Activ AWD standard. Several CVT rivals land one to three mpg higher combined. Over 12,000 miles a year that is a tank or two of fuel, not a mortgage payment, but it is a real difference and we are not going to pretend it is zero.
What you get back
A gearbox that responds the way your right foot expects, a manual shift mode that actually holds the gear, and a torque converter that has been in production long enough to be thoroughly understood. If you have driven a CVT and disliked the sensation, this is the reason the CX-5 keeps showing up on your shortlist.
The one Mazda that comes close
If you came looking for a CVT because you wanted the fuel economy that goes with one, drive the CX-50 Hybrid. The EPA lists its transmission as an automatic with variable gear ratios, because a hybrid power-split transaxle does not have fixed gears in the usual sense, and it drives much the way a CVT does. It returns 39 mpg city and 38 mpg combined, which is well clear of anything in this class with a conventional gearbox.
Mazda has also confirmed a CX-5 hybrid is coming after this launch, and hybrids typically use that same kind of transaxle. We wrote about the CX-5 hybrid and the Skyactiv-Z engine when the news broke. When it arrives, the answer on this page may be different for that one version. Everything you can buy today is the six-speed.
Buying a used CX-5? Do not bother checking
This one is easy. The CX-5 has used a conventional geared automatic across all three generations: 2013 to 2016, 2017 to 2025 and the 2026 redesign. A CVT is simply not something that exists on the used CX-5 market, so it is one fewer thing to inspect. If you are shopping used, our guide to the best year for a used Mazda CX-5 covers what is actually worth checking instead.
