Which Mazda CX-5 Trims Have Remote Start?

All five. Remote start is not a trim feature on the CX-5. It comes through Mazda Connected Services, so the base 2.5 S gets it on the same terms as the top Premium Plus, and every new 2026 CX-5 includes a one-year trial.

Remote Start by 2026 CX-5 Trim

If you came here expecting to find remote start starting at the Preferred trim, this is the good news: you do not have to spend up to get it. The column that actually varies is price, not capability.

The Part Nobody Explains

It Is Free for a Year, Then It Is a Subscription

Phone on the wireless charging pad in a Mazda CX-5 console, remote start through the MyMazda app

The 2026 CX-5 is the first Mazda with its own three-tier plan structure, separate from the rest of the lineup. Every new one comes with a full year of the top Premium Plan at no charge. After that year you keep up to nine more years of the Basic Plan, also at no charge, and Basic is where remote start disappears.

Basic

No charge, up to 9 years after the trial
  • Vehicle Health Report: oil level, tire pressure, tire pressure battery status, light status

No remote start.

Preferred

$10 per month plus tax
  • Remote Engine Start and Stop
  • Remote lock and unlock
  • Vehicle Finder and Vehicle Status Monitor
  • Send-to-Car navigation, Guest Driver Alert
  • Private eCall and Stolen Vehicle Assistance

This is the remote start tier.

Premium

$15 per month plus tax, free for year one
  • Everything in Preferred
  • Connectivity with Google built-in, so the car reaches Google apps without tethering

What you get for the first 12 months.

Put a reminder in your calendar for month 12

This is the bit that catches people out. Remote start works beautifully for a year, and then one cold morning in your second winter it does not, because the trial ended and Basic does not include it. Nothing is broken. You just need to subscribe in the MyMazda app. Knowing that in advance is better than finding out at 6:45am in a Durham driveway.

How To

Starting Your CX-5 From the App

Four steps, and the first two you only do once.

  1. Download MyMazda and create an account

Available for iPhone and Android. Use the same email address the vehicle is registered under so the two match up.

  2. Add the vehicle and accept the terms

You need the VIN. This is normally done with us at delivery, which is the easiest version, but you can do it yourself later from the app. The vehicle has to be verified before any remote function will work.

  3. Set your climate preference

Leave the climate control set the way you want it to come on. Remote start brings the cabin toward that setting, so if you left it on defrost in March, that is what you will get in July.

  4. Open the app and press Remote Engine Start

The engine runs and shuts off on its own after a set period rather than idling indefinitely. You can stop it early from the app. Doors stay locked while it runs.

What about starting it from the key fob?

The standard factory fob does not do it. Mazda has sold dealer-installed accessory remote start kits for earlier CX-5 generations, which work from the fob and need no subscription, but we have not confirmed one for the third-generation 2026 car and we are not going to tell you it exists until we have. Call our parts department at (919) 425-0878 with your model year and trim and they will give you a straight answer.

Buying used? Check before you assume

The complimentary period runs from the vehicle's original in-service date, not from when you buy it, so on a used CX-5 it has usually run out. The hardware is there and the feature works the moment you subscribe. Ask us to check the specific car, and while you are at it read what the Certified Pre-Owned programme covers and our guide to the best year for a used Mazda CX-5.

While you are in the accessories aisle, the other thing that stops a fob working is the coin cell inside it. We wrote a separate guide on changing the Mazda key fob battery.

CX-5 Remote Start Questions

Which Mazda CX-5 trims have remote start?
All five of them. Remote start is not a trim feature on the CX-5, so the base 2.5 S gets it on exactly the same terms as the 2.5 S Premium Plus. It arrives through Mazda Connected Services and the MyMazda app rather than through the options list, which is why you will not find it in a trim comparison chart.
Is remote start free on a new Mazda CX-5?
For the first year. Every new 2026 CX-5 includes a one-year complimentary trial of the Premium Plan, and Remote Engine Start and Stop is part of it. After that year you get up to nine more years of complimentary Basic Plan access, but Basic covers the Vehicle Health Report only. Remote start is not in Basic, so keeping it means subscribing.
What does Mazda remote start cost after the free trial?
Mazda lists the Preferred Plan at $10 per month plus tax, which includes Remote Engine Start and Stop, remote lock and unlock, Vehicle Finder, Vehicle Status Monitor, Send-to-Car navigation and Guest Driver Alert. The Premium Plan is $15 per month plus tax and adds connectivity with Google built-in. Pricing is set by Mazda and can change, so confirm the current rate in the MyMazda app before you subscribe.
How do I remote start my Mazda CX-5?
Open the MyMazda app, select your vehicle and choose Remote Engine Start. The car needs to be registered to your Connected Services account first, which is a one-time setup done at delivery or from the app afterwards. The engine runs to bring the cabin toward your set temperature and shuts off on its own after a set period, or when you press stop in the app.
Can I remote start the CX-5 from the key fob instead of the app?
Not from the standard factory fob. Mazda has sold dealer-installed accessory remote start kits for earlier CX-5 generations that work from the key fob without a subscription, but we are not going to tell you one exists for the 2026 car until we have confirmed it. Call our parts department at (919) 425-0878 and ask about your specific model year and trim.
Does remote start work on a used or certified pre-owned CX-5?
It depends on the model year and on whether the previous owner ever activated Connected Services. Mazda has offered app-based remote start on CX-5 model years going back several years, but the trial period follows the vehicle's original in-service date, so on a used car it has usually expired. Assume you will need to subscribe, and ask us to check the specific vehicle before you buy.
How long does the CX-5 run when you remote start it?
The engine shuts itself off automatically after a set period rather than idling indefinitely, and you can stop it early from the app. On a Durham morning in the twenties that is usually long enough to clear the windscreen and take the edge off the cabin. In August it is long enough that the air conditioning has done something useful by the time you walk out.
What else comes with Mazda Connected Services on the 2026 CX-5?
The 2026 CX-5 added Private eCall, which contacts an emergency operator with your location after a crash, and Stolen Vehicle Assistance, which helps police locate the vehicle. Both sit on the Preferred plan alongside remote start. The Premium plan adds Google built-in, so the car reaches Google apps and services without tethering to your phone.

We Will Set It Up With You at Delivery

The app registration takes about five minutes and it is much easier done here than in your driveway.
